'The Iron Horse' magazine latest edition is out now

The Iron Horse is the Lakeside Railway Society's award-winning magazine. It is published three times a year and carries the latest news from the Lakeside Railway Society, the Furness Railway Trust and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

The latest edition is Autumn/Winter 2006.

The first edition of The Iron Horse  was published in 1968The magazine has won a number of awards in recent years under the editorship of Martin Hewlett, and in Spring 2005, it reached its 100th edition, with a pedigree stretching back to 1968! The first ever edition of The Iron Horse is shown (right).

The magazine is delivered free in spring, summer and late autumn every year to members of the Lakeside Railway Society. It is also available on general sale, which raises valuable income to offset production costs, and to assist the Society and the Furness Railway Trust in their projects.

 

In the Autumn/Winter 2006 edition:

FRT BUYS ROYAL COACH
The Furness Railway Trust has purchased Princess Alexandra's Royal Saloon. Built in 1898, it later saw service carrying senior railway engineers around East Anglia. Now the Trust intends to restore this vehicle to its former glories.

FRT ACQUIRES THIRD MATCHING VINTAGE TRAIN CARRIAGE BODY
The Trust has been formally offered a NLR First Class carriage body, which matches the NLR Second Class carriage we have already returned to service. The First Class coach won't just tell a story about luxury: it became an Ambulance Coach during the First World War, with one compartment modified to carry wounded troops back from the Front Line.

The FRT's Great Western Railway 0-6-2T hauled its first train in preservation on September 1st, and has since been in revenue earning service at the Llangollen Railway, both at that line's Gala Weekend in September, and more recently on charters and the first Santa Specials. As such, the restoration project is now over...

AUSTIN MAHER
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway Company Chairman died in October. Austin did more than anyone to ensure that the L&HR was able to grow to become one of the most successful tourist operations in the Lake District.

FAIRBURN MODEL LAUNCH
The Bachmann model of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway's Fairburn tank Number 42073 was formally launched, alongside the "real thing", on 26th October. Bachmann presented 42073's owner, the LHR General Manager Michael Maher, with one of the models.
