THE LAKESIDE RAILWAY SOCIETY

The Iron Horse magazine

'The Iron Horse' magazine latest edition is out now

The Iron Horse is the Lakeside Railway Society's award-winning magazine. It is published three times a year and carries the latest news from the Lakeside Railway Society, the Furness Railway Trust and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway.

The latest edition is Autumn/Winter 2008.

The first edition of The Iron Horse was published in 1968This is the final magazine under the editorship of Martin Hewlett, under whose charge it has won a number of awards. Martin is having to step down for family reasons and we wish him well, and thank him for 20 years and 60 editions of the magazine! In Spring 2005, it reached its 100th edition, with a pedigree stretching back to 1968! The first ever edition of The Iron Horse is shown (right).

The magazine is delivered free in spring, summer and late autumn every year to members of the Lakeside Railway Society. It is also available on general sale, which raises valuable income to offset production costs, and to assist the Society and the Furness Railway Trust in their projects.

In the Autumn Winter 2008 edition:

THE TIGHTEST OF SQUEEZES
The North East tour undertaken by the FRT's 1863 built Furness Railway Number 20 last September was a great success - but we can now reveal just how close it came to running into an embarrassing snag, twice! We were saved by half an inch...

ARE THOSE REAL RIVETS?
The FRT has advised the team at Loughborough that is undertaking a rebuild on Haverthwaite-based Fairburn tank No. 42085 - on the tricky subject of 800 fake rivet heads! New welded tanks have been made for the locomotive, and the dummy heads are needed to get the "right look". We've been there before when the new tender was made for FR Number 20 in the 1990s...

COPPER CAP GLORY FOR "WOOTTON HALL"
The FRT's "big engine" is currently stored at Appleby awaiting restoration, but preventative work continues apace, and parts are sourced as funds or the opportunity allow. The engine will sport a real copper cap on its chimney (not the plated steel version originally supplied by the Great Western Railway) following the lead taken by our operational GWR locomotive No. 5643 (which is on hire for the majority of 2009 to the Llangollen Railway).

KNOW WHERE YOU ARE
LRS volunteers have undertaken a makeover of all ten of the mileposts (found every quarter of a mile) and all seven gradient posts along the length of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway - some of which required new arms and lettering. All now stand out well with their new coats of white paint!

BRANCH MEETINGS TO LIGHTEN WINTER NIGHTS
There's a show and tell night at the LRS Preston Branch meeting in February; whilst the speaker is yet to be confirmed at the Furness Branch in March.
