THE LAKESIDE RAILWAY SOCIETY

Tributes to Jim Kay Senior

Jim Kay Snr, who's died aged 80Members of the Lakeside Railway Society and Furness Railway Trust at the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway are in mourning, following the death on Sunday June 11th of Jim Kay Senior.

The 80 year old from Blackpool had served as the Lakeside Railway Society's President for 3 decades, a role that saw him welcome members to the Annual General Meeting each spring and play a guiding role for the Society's Committee. When the Society set up the Furness Railway Trust in 1991, Jim became one of the charity's Trustees, a similar overseeing and guiding role which he continued to play with pride right up until his death.

In the early days of the operation of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, Jim was on the roster as a regular steam engine fireman, but his most significant contribution on the ground has been as a key member of the Trust's sales team over the years, visiting shows around the North West to raise funds for Trust activities. He's seen here at Fleetwood's Tram Sunday in 2004.

Jim will be remembered for his generosity and his dedication to the cause, which didn't waver despite poor health in the last year. The Furness Railway Trust's Chairman, Tim Owen, who's known Jim for 35 years, said "Jim has contributed a huge amount of time and effort over many years and we have much to thank him for. We will all miss him."

His son, Jim Kay Junior, is the Trust's Sales and Museum Officer, and our thoughts are with him and his family at this time.
