The Lakeside Railway Society is made up of almost 400 members. Membership of the LRS allows people to work as volunteers on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. The affairs of the society are decided a Committee which is elected at the Annual General Meeting each March.

The Lakeside Railway Society is a full member of the Heritage Railways Association.
The LRS holds shares in the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway Company Ltd, and in Steamtown Railway Museum Ltd.
